Specialty Scanning

Specialty scanning and high resolution photographic capture at The Print Refinery of Vernon Hills
Unusual Original? No Problem.

Specialty Scanning

Some originals simply do not fit a standard scanner. From documents and scrapbook pages to artwork, oversized pieces and specialty media, we build a capture method around the original.

Projects are evaluated individually so we can recommend the safest and most appropriate scanning or photographic capture method.

Right Tool for the Original

Scanner or Camera Capture

We choose the appropriate flatbed, document-scanning or photographic capture method based on the original itself.

Careful Handling

Built for Unusual Materials

Delicate, adhered, oversized, framed and unusually shaped originals can be handled outside the standard photo workflow.

Custom Projects

Evaluated Individually

Specialty originals vary widely, so we can review the project before recommending a capture method, file format and workflow.

What Counts as Specialty Scanning?

When Standard Photo Scanning Isn't the Right Fit

Specialty Scanning covers originals that require a different capture method because of their size, material, condition or intended use.

Document Scanning

Paper documents, correspondence, records, newspapers and similar originals that need to be converted into PDF or JPEG files.

High Resolution Photography

Artwork, oversized originals, framed pieces, X-rays, renderings and items that cannot be safely placed on a flatbed scanner.

Albums & Delicate Originals

Scrapbook pages, photo albums, adhered images, fragile pieces and originals that need special handling or individual cropping.

Not sure where your project belongs?

Bring it in. We can look at the original and determine whether standard photo scanning, specialty scanning or photographic capture is the best fit.

Built Around the Original

How Specialty Scanning Works

The process begins by understanding what you have and what you need the finished file to do.

01

We Evaluate

We review the size, condition, material and intended use of the original before selecting a capture method.

02

We Capture

The original is scanned or photographed using the equipment appropriate for the project.

03

We Finish

Captured files are cropped and prepared according to the requirements of the project and chosen output format.

Paper to Digital

Document Scanning

Paper documents can be scanned using a roll scanner or flatbed, depending on their size and condition.

Method 96 DPI PDF 300 DPI PDF 300 DPI JPEG
Roll Scanner $0.25 $0.35 $0.45
Small-Format Flatbed $0.50 $0.70 $0.90
Large-Format Flatbed
up to 11×17
$1.00 $1.50 $2.00
Choosing PDF or JPEG

PDF is generally appropriate when the priority is preserving document pages in an easily viewed file. JPEG is available when individual pages need to be treated as separate image files.

Too Large for the Scanner?

High Resolution Photography

When an original cannot be safely or practically placed on a flatbed scanner, it can be photographed in our studio using controlled lighting and a high-resolution digital camera.

Captured images are white balanced and cropped to the edge of the original.

Current Pricing

11–18 inches $20
19–32 inches $25
33–48 inches $30
49–60 inches $35

Pricing is based on the longest dimension of the original. Originals longer than 60 inches on any side are not currently supported.

More Than Loose Prints

Albums, Scrapbooks & Delicate Originals

Some collections need to remain intact or require additional handling before they can be digitized.

Entire Page Capture

Album and scrapbook pages can be captured as complete pages when preserving the layout itself is important.

Individual Elements

Individual photographs or elements on a page can also be cropped into separate image files when appropriate.

Photo Removal

In some projects, photographs can be removed from albums before scanning when requested and when the materials allow it.
